The Council on Spiritual Initiatives (COSI) is responsible for initiating and coordinating various ministries related to spiritual formation. It is the objective of this council to continually provide opportunities for people to find deeper connections to God through prayer, study and enrichment events.
Prayer Labyrinth: The church has 2 canvas prayer labyrinths that McFarlin groups are welcome to request for their use. One is smaller and fits nicely in a large classroom for use. Various times in the church year, the prayer labyrinth is scheduled in Fenn Hall for personal prayer time. Take advantage of this very meaningful opportunity to deepen your spiritual life through walking the labyrinth. The COSI council has a future dream of a more permanent outdoor labyrinth for our members and the community.
Retreats and Special Weekend Events: The COSI Council will offer a spiritual growth retreat each year on a date to be announced. It will be designed for youth or adults to have an opportunity to take a day or weekend away for contemplation, prayer, and witness among friends. Watch the COSI Corner article in the newsletter or announcements throughout the church for this and other events.
The COSI Council is committed to bringing to McFarlin outstanding spiritual formation leaders for our community. We will continue to secure leadership from our local community, nation and global community as leaders for special planned weekend events. Plans are currently underway to bring a nationally known spiritual formation leader to our local community in 2010. If you would like to be among the first to know about this and other events, we have established a "Friends of COSI" e-mail list. Contact Betsy Penn at bpenn@ou.edu to be added to this list.
Small Groups: COSI will continually sponsor and offer various spiritual formation groups throughout the year. Contact Harriette Leigh Kemp at hrleigh@cox.net or at the church at 321-3484 if you would like more information about any small groups. We will continue to offer Companions in Christ groups and have seasonal short term groups on going throughout the year. Watch this website, the church newsletter and bulletin for new groups that are beginning. If you have a particular wish for a spiritual formation group to be offered, please contact Betsy Penn at bpenn@ou.edu.
Taize Worship: Occasionally the COSI Council will offer contemplative worship services for seasonal occasions. As noted on the web, "Taize is an ecumenical sung and silent participatory prayer service designed to achieve a contemplative state through music, song and silence." Again, you will see announcements when these services are available. If anyone would like to help with the music for these services, please contact Betsy Penn at bpenn@ou.edu.
